The performance audit was announced in January 2024 as part of the OAG’s planned work programme.
Today’s report on the findings of the performance audit notes areas of strength across the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) skilled residence visa system and opportunities to improve its effectiveness.
The report found that INZ has already undertaken work to improve our customers’ experience when applying for a skilled residence visa. The report also commented on the effectiveness of the quality management system for processing skilled residence visa applications. It also commended the dedication and commitment of INZ staff.
The report also makes several recommendations. These focus on making it easier for skilled residence applicants to track application progress and enhancing reporting and monitoring. Improved reporting and monitoring will help us better evaluate the system’s effectiveness, target improvements, and give greater visibility of how well the system is working to attract and retain skilled migrants.
We accept these recommendations in principle and will look at how we can implement them in line with INZ’s current work programme, priorities and resources. Some work is already underway, for example to improve external reporting to give more visibility of how the visa system is performing. A new framework to improve our customer’s experience is also being rolled out across the immigration system. This will enable more visibility, sharing and collaboration of initiatives to help us continue improving our service.
About the Skilled Residence visa category
The Skilled Residence visa category supports New Zealand’s economic growth by targeting migrants who can fill medium-to-long term skilled jobs that are hard, or take time, to fill with workers already in New Zealand.
