The first group of workers from Timor-Leste arrived in New Zealand on 7 February 2026, marking an important milestone in New Zealand’s Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme.
Following their arrival, the workers travelled to Nelson, where they were welcomed with a pōwhiri before beginning induction with their employer. The induction will support the workers to settle in and understand their roles, workplace expectations, and life in New Zealand.
Timor-Leste formally joined the RSE scheme in 2025, creating opportunities for Timorese workers to gain skills and experience through seasonal employment, while helping to meet labour needs in New Zealand’s horticulture and viticulture sectors.

Loua Ward, National Manager of the Pacific Unit, said the arrival reflects extensive preparation and close regional collaboration.
“Immigration New Zealand has supported Timor‑Leste’s entry into the RSE scheme by providing practical expertise to help establish the systems needed for successful participation.”
The arrival of the first workers reflects the strong and growing relationship between New Zealand and Timor-Leste. It also reflects a shared commitment to safe, well-managed opportunities for people to move for work in ways that benefit both workers and employers.
