The Community Organisation Refugee Sponsorship (CORS) programme supports New Zealand-based community organisations to sponsor refugees for resettlement, complementing the Refugee Quota Programme. Approved sponsors provide financial, emotional, and practical support to help newly arrived refugees integrate into the community.

Escaping violence

Growing up in a small village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Don Darius Niyigena (pictured) could never have imagined that he would end up thousands of miles away in New Zealand. His life changed dramatically when rebel forces began to attack his village, leading to a harrowing escape that left him separated from his family. For four years, he found himself in Zambia, where life was treacherous, with limited freedom.

Don’s journey to New Zealand began in November 2023 when he was selected to take part in the CORS programme. In this innovative programme, community sponsors are matched with refugees prior to their arrival in New Zealand, ensuring that the newcomers receive the essential support they need to begin their fresh start.

Adapting to life in New Zealand with the help of sponsors

Don expresses his deep gratitude for the support from his sponsors, attributing it to the sense of stability he has experienced. “From the very start, my sponsors ensured I felt settled and secure,” he shares. “They assisted me in finding a place to live, accompanied me on shopping trips, and helped me furnish my new home. The cultural guidance and community introductions provided by the group helped me adapt to life in New Zealand.”

A little over a year into his new journey in New Zealand, Don has embraced his new life there with enthusiasm. “I’ve come to appreciate the local cuisine, such as fish and chips and pavlova, and I’ve formed friendships with my colleagues and neighbors, sharing stories and laughter during barbecues and dinners.”

Employed and thriving

Don is now employed at a private company with supportive values and has found a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. “My co-workers have been incredibly warm, supportive, and friendly, and I’ve learned a great deal from them,” he shares. “I also gained the confidence to learn how to drive, which was a major milestone for me. Successfully passing my restricted driving test on the second try has granted me a sense of independence and freedom.”

Looking back on his journey, Don feels a sense of hope for his future. “I aspire to build a career in my field, give back to the community through volunteering, and seek out entrepreneurial ventures,” he shares.

He offers wise words to fellow refugees and migrants: “Remain resilient, welcome new opportunities, nurture gratitude, and engage with your community. The generosity of the sponsors through the Community Organisation Refugee Programme has changed my life, allowing me to rebuild and flourish in New Zealand.”
