Both councils and their communities have been formally accredited as Committed Welcoming Communities.
The accreditation recognises that the communities are committed to building welcoming, inclusive communities and value newcomers. It also acknowledges that they have taken active steps to create an environment where all residents can thrive and belong.
Andrew Lockhart, Immigration New Zealand’s National Manager of Refugee and Migrant Services, acknowledges the commitment of all participants in the Welcoming Communities programme who have joined over the past 6 years.
“It’s great to see more regions seeing the value of the accreditation process. Over one-third of city and district councils are now committed to making their communities more welcoming for everyone,” says Andrew.
“All these participants are helping build strong and connected communities and making newcomers from all backgrounds feel welcome and included, so everyone can succeed.”
Welcoming Communities Members
Nelson City Council and Masterton District Council join 35 councils, 5 local community boards and associated communities across New Zealand that are part of Welcoming Communities.
